Vegan Baby Formula: Bebe M Anti-Reflux Alternatives (2026)

By: Suzanne Renee' - Updated October 2026 - 9 Minute Read

European baby formulas are constantly evolving to meet the needs of most families looking for a breastfeeding alternative. Milk-based powders have been the standard in infant nutrition, designed with the perfect balance of nutrients to support healthy growth and development.

However, there are still limited options for plant-based, vegan households and those little ones with a true milk protein allergy that causes digestive distress, such as reflux.

Bebe M Anti-Reflux was one of the few organic vegan formulas made for reflux, and it's no longer available at The Milky Box. Below, we cover how vegan rice protein formulas work, what made Bebe M different, and the plant-based alternative we now recommend.

Table of Contents:

What is Vegan Baby Formula?

Defined vegan baby formula has been made using no animal-derived products or byproducts. Instead, vegan baby formula is designed from all plant-derived ingredients.

The label of vegan formula will never list dairy-based ingredients, such as milk or the milk proteins casein and whey, no eggs, and indeed no components derived from meat or fish used to make it.

Taking on the vegan label will ensure families avoid purchasing or using items tested on animals.

Can Vegan Baby Formula Be Good for My Baby?

There are four primary protein sources allowed in infant formula. These protein sources are cow's milk, goat's milk, soy protein isolates, and hydrolyzed proteins.

Each one, including vegan formula, has many benefits for babies and toddlers that are not limited to all the essential nutrients your baby needs to grow and develop.

How do vegan baby formulas fit in? Let's take a closer look.

Current Regulations

There are strict regulations set by the European Union that govern vegan baby formula. These regulations ensure that each infant's dietary needs are met in a unique way.

Foods for Special Medical Purposes

It is important to note that products classified as Food for Special Medical Purposes (FSMP) in Europe, including powdered baby formula, should only be administered under the supervision of a medical professional.

This is especially true when a standard diet cannot meet individuals' special nutritional requirements. Therefore, seeking medical advice before using such products is highly recommended.

Hydrolyzed Rice Protein

Vegan formulas made with hydrolyzed rice protein do fall in the FSMP category. This does not mean hydrolyzed rice formulas are only made for medical purposes.

This innovation in infant nutrition has yet to find the perfect place in the baby formula chain; ongoing food technologies have been studied to the extent that they continue to be performed.

Critical studies with rice protein formulas highlight this vegan option as a safe and healthy alternative.

Dietary Restrictions

European infant nutritionists recommend hydrolyzed rice formulas as an alternative to infants with dietary restrictions such as lactose intolerance or a milk protein allergy.

European pediatricians advocate for treating digestive worries caused by standard infant formulas, such as reflux and regurgitation.

How Does Vegan Baby Formula Provide Protein and Fat for My Baby?

Families considering a vegan option usually start with whether hydrolyzed rice protein formulas provide infants with balanced nutrition for healthy physical growth and cognitive development.

Hydrolyzed Baby Formula

As in traditional baby formulas, each scoop is critical to ensure that each baby gets the perfect food.

Protein

Enzymatic hydrolysis is a process in which enzymes facilitate the cleavage of molecule bonds by adding water elements. This plays a vital role in the digestion of food and nutrient absorption.

Amino Acids & Fat

Infants require a balanced intake of essential nutrients, including amino acids and fats, for healthy growth and development. Hydrolyzed rice protein, a popular ingredient in infant formulas, is an excellent source of protein as it naturally contains components that mimic those found in breast milk.

Additionally, the fat content in infant formulas is typically derived from vegetable oils, which are rich in unsaturated fatty acids that provide energy for the baby's growing body and brain. Ensuring that infants receive adequate nutrients is crucial for their health and well-being.

Carbohydrates

Hydrolyzed rice proteins are lactose-free, and a clean energy source is needed. Vegan formulas will often use cornstarch or maltodextrin. Sprout Organic, for example, uses organic rice starch as its main carbohydrate.

Ingredients to Avoid in Vegan Baby Formula

Ensuring the best nutrition in all formulas, including vegan options, means avoiding toxic or dangerous additives.

Some of the unwanted ingredients include:

⚠️ Refined sugar

⚠️ Corn Syrup

⚠️ Genetically Modified Ingredients (GMOs)

⚠️ Gluten

⚠️ Soy

⚠️ Heavy Metals

Arsenic in Rice Formula

Rice has been a staple of infant diets for decades. It is often one of the first foods parents introduce when weaning from the breast or bottle.

Like other grains, rice is planted in the ground. During the growing process, rice plants may be exposed to arsenic and other heavy metals in the soil and water used for irrigation. This accumulation of arsenic in the rice plant results in trace amounts showing in the infants' foods.

Safety

Recent studies have concluded that the arsenic content in hydrolyzed rice formula is comparable to the amounts found in other conventional formulas and water supplies.

The average consumption volume in hydrolyzed organic formulas is well below safety concern levels.

The same applies to newer rice-based formulas such as Sprout Organic, which blends rice and pea proteins. For more on testing and limits, see Are There Heavy Metals in Baby Formula?

What Happened to Bebe M Anti-Reflux?

We no longer carry the Bebe M range, along with Prémibio and Prémiriz. Bebe M Anti-Reflux was a French organic vegan formula made from hydrolyzed rice protein and thickened with carob and corn starch, in three stages from birth to toddler.

That made it both plant-based and thickened for reflux, which few formulas are. Before you switch, it helps to know which of those your baby actually needed:

• Mainly a vegan or dairy-free formula. A complete plant-based formula like Sprout Organic is the closest everyday swap.

• A thickened formula for diagnosed reflux. Sprout isn't thickened. Ask your pediatrician about an anti-reflux (AR) formula, which may be dairy-based.

• A hydrolyzed formula for a confirmed milk protein allergy. Vegan doesn't mean hypoallergenic. Your pediatrician should choose the replacement.

Sprout Organic: Our Plant-Based Alternative

Sprout Organic is an Australian certified organic, certified vegan formula. It blends organic rice and pea proteins, uses organic rice starch instead of lactose, and gets DHA from algae. It's dairy-free, soy-free, palm-oil-free and non-GMO, in 800g tins.

Feeding Tips for Reflux-Prone Babies

• Offer smaller, more frequent feeds.

• Try paced bottle feeding so your baby swallows less air.

• Burp during and after each feed.

• Keep your baby upright for 20–30 minutes after feeding.

If your baby has poor weight gain, refuses feeds, or vomits forcefully, call your pediatrician. Switching? Most families move over across 5–7 days; see our guide to switching baby formula.
