HiPP Comfort vs HiPP Anti-Reflux vs HiPP HA: Which HiPP Formula Is Right for Your Baby?

By: The Milky Box Team - Updated October 2026 - 7 Minute Read

HiPP makes three special formulas for babies who need something a little different from a standard formula: HiPP Comfort, HiPP Anti-Reflux (AR) and HiPP HA. They look similar on the shelf, but each one is designed for a different situation. Here’s how they compare, ingredient by ingredient, so you can talk it through with your pediatrician and choose with confidence.

Quick answer:

  • HiPP Comfort is designed for babies with gas, colic or constipation. It has broken-down (hydrolyzed) protein and reduced lactose.
  • HiPP Anti-Reflux is designed for babies who spit up often. It’s thickened with locust bean gum to help keep feeds down.
  • HiPP HA is designed for babies with a family history of allergies. It has hydrolyzed protein and lactose as its only carbohydrate, and it is not suitable for babies who already have a cow’s milk protein allergy.

Talk to your pediatrician first. HiPP Comfort and HiPP Anti-Reflux are special formulas meant to be used on medical advice. If you suspect a cow’s milk protein allergy, or your baby has blood in the stool, poor weight gain or forceful vomiting, see your pediatrician before changing formula.

HiPP Comfort: for gas, colic and constipation

HiPP Comfort is made for babies who struggle with wind, crying after feeds or harder stools. Three things make it different from a standard formula:

  • Hydrolyzed whey protein, broken into smaller pieces so it’s easier to digest.
  • Reduced lactose, for babies whose discomfort may be linked to lactose.
  • A special fat structure (beta-palmitate), modeled on the fats in breast milk.

The German version also contains the probiotic culture L. fermentum; both versions contain prebiotic GOS.

HiPP Anti-Reflux: for frequent spit-up

HiPP Anti-Reflux is thickened with locust bean gum, a natural thickener from carob seeds. The thicker feed is designed to stay down more easily in babies who spit up often. The protein is intact rather than hydrolyzed.

Because it’s thicker, an anti-reflux formula isn’t usually the right choice for a baby who is constipated; see our constipation guide. The German version contains L. fermentum; the UK version does not.

HiPP HA: for babies with a family history of allergies

HiPP HA (hypoallergenic) uses hydrolyzed whey protein, so the protein pieces are smaller and less likely to trigger the immune system. It’s often chosen when a parent or sibling has allergies, eczema or asthma. Lactose is its only carbohydrate, and it contains L. fermentum and prebiotic GOS.

HiPP HA is a partially hydrolyzed formula. HiPP states it must not be used if a cow’s milk protein allergy already exists or is suspected. In that case, your pediatrician may recommend an extensively hydrolyzed or amino-acid formula.

How to choose

  • Mostly gas, crying after feeds or hard stools? HiPP Comfort is designed for this.
  • Mostly frequent spit-up that bothers your baby? HiPP Anti-Reflux is designed for this.
  • A family history of allergies, and you want a gentler protein from the start? HiPP HA is designed for this.
  • Suspected or diagnosed cow’s milk protein allergy? None of these three; ask your pediatrician about an extensively hydrolyzed or amino-acid formula.

When you change formula, give your baby time to adjust and follow your pediatrician’s advice. Our guide to switching formula explains how.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between HiPP Comfort and HiPP HA?

Both use hydrolyzed whey protein. HiPP Comfort also has reduced lactose, a special fat structure and starch, and is designed for digestive discomfort such as gas, colic and constipation. HiPP HA keeps lactose as its only carbohydrate and is designed for babies with a family history of allergies.

Is HiPP Anti-Reflux good for constipation?

Usually not. Anti-reflux formulas are thicker, which can make constipation worse. For a constipated baby, HiPP Comfort is the HiPP formula designed for that.

Is HiPP HA suitable for a cow’s milk protein allergy?

No. HiPP HA is designed to help lower the risk of allergies in babies who don’t have one yet. Babies with a confirmed or suspected cow’s milk protein allergy need a formula recommended by their pediatrician.

What’s the difference between the German and UK versions?

The German HiPP Comfort and Anti-Reflux contain the probiotic culture L. fermentum; the UK versions don’t. The UK versions come in larger 800 g cans.

Can I use these formulas from birth?

Yes. HiPP Comfort, HiPP Anti-Reflux, HiPP HA Pre and HiPP HA Stage 1 are suitable from birth; HiPP HA Stage 2 is from 6 months.
